New Kent, VA – On Monday, July 15, 2019, the New Kent County Planning Commission re-considered their directive from the Board of Supervisors to develop language and definitions to add tactical combat training facilities to the list of prohibited land uses. The commission had held a public hearing and discussed, then tabled the issue last month, so there was no new public hearing on the topic. However, Barhamsville concerned citizens (Charles Karow, Patti Peterson, John Lockwood, Dawn Estrin, Terri Peterson, Sandi Gauthier and Joe Davis) used the citizen comment period to rebut the misinformation offered by some of the commissioners during last month’s meeting. During the June meeting, some of the commissioners claimed that the county code already had protection against facilities similar to the one proposed by Custis’ CUP-02-18, and insisted that no prohibition was needed.
In the end, the citizens’ comments had the desired effect, and the commission voted (6 to 2) to recommend to the Board of Supervisors that tactical combat training facilities be added to the list of prohibited land uses.
The recommendation and proposed definition will be sent to the Board of Supervisors for consideration at their August meeting.
