Toano – The Williamsburg Christian Retreat Center hosted a community meeting Tuesday, July 10th, at which John Lockwood, Eric Cruz and Charles Karow presented detailed facts on the Curtis Security Consulting proposed combat training facility.
Lockwood provided an overview of the proposal and details of the proposed activities and noise levels.
He also discussed the recently released staff report, in which New Kent County planning staff concluded that “… the proposed use is not in compliance with the Rural Lands or Hamlet designations in the Comprehensive Plan. Staff also recognizes that this use would be a significant change to the Barhamsville area of New Kent County.”
Cruz described the Surface Danger Zone, and showed how it extended well beyond
the boundaries of the Curtis property, into local residential properties.
Cruz also gave a brief description of the Federal contracting market, and the limited value of a Woman-Owned Small Business (WOSB) in comparison to
the myriad of other set-asides for small businesses at the Federal level.
Karow gave a presentation, “Dispelling the Myths,” that provided factual rebuttals to some of the claims that have been made about the proposal.
The audience had lots of questions, and lively discussion ensued about the training facility, and its potential relationship to the many other, similar facilities in the US; including a dozen in the Mid-Atlantic region.
Many were interested in reading more at the Web site (NoCombatRangeNK.com), and in getting T-shirts and signs. All were encouraged to attend the Monday, July 16th Planning Commission meeting at New Kent High School, and bring a friend.
